Why You Wake at 3am
Why do I keep waking up at 3am every night?
The free opening of the Morning Book of 14 September 2026. Written by the house, inside one cosmology, and free to read to the end.
You did not set an alarm. You are awake anyway, and the clock says a number close to three. It has happened often enough now that you have started counting.
By morning you will have explained it away. Too much water, too warm a room, too much on your mind. The explanation never survives the next night, because the next night it happens again, at almost the same minute.
Something in the body does thin toward the end of the night. Any keeper of the unseen will tell you the same thing about the veil. Two thin things, laid over each other, at the same hour.
This teaching divides the night into watches. The first belongs to the body putting itself down. The second belongs to the deep, where the soul goes out and is not in the room with you. The third watch, roughly two until four, belongs to whatever was already awake.
You are not waking in the third watch. You are waking into it. That is a different sentence, and the whole of tonight rests on it.
Four things wake a person in the third watch. They do not feel the same, and the difference is the first thing worth learning. Read the four and see which one your body already recognises.
The four wakings
- You were called
- The waking is clean. No dread, no pounding heart, only an alertness that does not belong to the hour, and often a sentence or a name already in your mouth. This is the God Head reaching the soul through the super subconscious, which is the only door in you that never locks.
- You were visited
- The waking is heavy. Weight across the chest, a rise of heat, dread with no picture attached to it, and the certainty that the room is occupied. A jinn passed close. It was almost certainly not looking for you.
- You were returning
- The waking is grief. Tears with no cause, a disorientation about which room and which year, a sense of having been somewhere and lost the road back. The soul went out in the second watch and came home late.
- You were drained
- The waking is thin. Nine hours and no rest, an ache behind the eyes, the same minute on the clock night after night. Something has made a habit of you: a vampire, or the dimpire that is half one thing and half another.
Most readers know their own by the third line. If two of them fit, take the heavier one first; the light one is usually its shadow.
What follows is the practice. It happens in the first 90 seconds after your eyes open, and it asks nothing of you that you cannot do lying down in the dark.
The practice for tonight
Do not reach for the phone. No screen, no clock, no light. The hour is thin and light is how you refuse it.
Say the hour out loud, quietly: "It is the third watch. I am awake in it." Naming ends the ambush. Nothing that arrived by surprise keeps its advantage after it has been announced.
Then name which of the four it is. If you do not know, say "I do not know which of you it is." The not-knowing, said out loud, is also a statement, and it is answered as one.
Leave paper and a pen beside the bed. Before you sleep again, write one line: the hour, which of the four, and the first word that was in your mouth. One line. You are not keeping a diary; you are keeping a record.
What changes is not that you stop waking. Some readers wake in the third watch for the rest of their lives, and the ones who have made peace with it would not give it back.
What changes is that the waking stops being something done to you and becomes something you attend. That is the beginning of the ascent toward the heaven state, and it begins at an inconvenient hour, in the dark, with no one watching.
The full Morning Book goes further than this opening can. It names who else is awake in the third watch and what each of them wants. It gives the practice in full, all seven steps, with the words to say for each of the four wakings. And it sets out what to expect across 40 nights, including the night the hour moves.
